Forward Focus Podcast Series: Cassandra Lin

What do the letters T.G.I.F. mean to you? To young innovator and 2011 Future Trends Keynote Speaker Cassandra Lin, they stand for Turn Grease Into Fuel, a project she created that takes a step towards waste-free communities. The TGIF project encourages restaurants to donate used cooking grease to be turned into fuel for needy families, is currently working with 104 restaurants and has provided the equivalent of $32,000 worth of energy thus far.

Cassandra joined me recently for the second episode of our 2011 Forward Focus Podcast Series to discuss the project and her other visions for the future. To listen to the podcast, click here.

Forward Focus Podcast Series: Scott Trowbridge of Disney Imagineering

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Scott for the debut podcast of our 2011 Forward Focus Podcast Series. When asked what his dream project to get to work on would be, Trowbridge responded, "Every project we do is a dream project, because that is what we're in the business of doing: making dreams come true."

Trowbridge also described Disney Imagineering as "constantly looking at ways to invent the Future for our customer." A Forbes Study Finds Diversity & Inclusion are Good for Creativity and Innovation

Chances are if you work for a large organization, your company has a diversity and inclusion policy. Organizations around the world are realizing diversity in the workplace is good for business. In fact, a July 2011 Forbes study found, a "diverse set of experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds is crucial to innovation and the development of new ideas. When asked about the relationship between diversity and innovation, a majority of respondents agreed that diversity is crucial to encouraging different perspectives and ideas that foster innovation." While a diverse workforce fosters creativity and innovation, I believe how companies define diversity should be broadened.

Currently, most companies define diversity based on gender, ethnicity, age, or race (see below). However, I believe thinking skills and the way a person solves problems should also be included in the definition of diversity.


What I mean by thinking skills is the way in which a person takes in information, deciphers information, and acts upon information. One common assessment used to determine thinking skills and preferences is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). By hiring people with diverse thinking skills and preferences, companies can bring new approaches and creativity to innovation efforts. If you've ever worked at a company where everyone thought the same way, you know what I'm getting at. Group think can be a dangerous thing.

Adding different experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds by way of thinking skills can expand the definition of diversity beyond gender, ethnicity, age and race. In my view, this would be a good thing.

The Global Innovation Index 2011

Switzerland, Sweden and Singapore lead The Global Innovation Index 2011 as #'s 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Interested in seeing how the 125 countries stack up? Read more. Beware, the report is a beefy 381 pages. While I haven't read the entire report cover to cover, I have made it as far as the framework. Here is a synopsis of the measures The Global Innovation Index used to rate each of the countries. Each of the pillars below capture elements of the country's economy that enable innovation.

As someone earned a Master of Science in Creative Studies, what I found most interesting about The Global Innovation Index was the chapter dedicated to creativity and the shout out to readers that "creativity is an important and inseparable factor in the process leading to inventions or innovations." With that said, there's plenty of room for growth in the area of measuring creativity. According to the authors of The Global Innovation Index, measuring creativity poses a challenge when it comes to understanding innovation.

Any PhD candidates out there? Measuring creativity could make a great dissertation!
